Union Hotel Demolition

The City of Trail purchased the Union Hotel and three adjacent properties on Cedar Avenue, for a total cost of $125,000.  The initial negotiations took place in later 2016 through to early 2017 with an official closing date of August 31, 2017. In 2018, the City contracted with Peak Environmental, a full-service environmental consulting firm, to oversee the hazardous material abatement for the buidling. The total cost of the abatement was $300,000.

The City is now proceeding with the demolition of building located at 1144 Cedar Avenue and the Union Hotel, and remediation of the lots.  The combined property will then be marketed to potential buyers for redevelopment.

Demolition Plan and Schedule

The City's vision is to see construction of a new and modern business that will complement the existing downtown businesses and the recent improvements the City has made to downtown amenities, such as the Victoria Street Corridor, the Esplanade, the Trail Memorial Centre, the Columbia River Skywalk and the Trail Riverfront Centre. The development will also result in new property tax revenue for the City and will ideally create a number of new jobs for the area.

The demolition commenced on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.

The demolition and post demolition works will take 6 weeks to complete per the schedule below.

  • Mobilization to site and site preparations - In progress
  • Building demolitions - June 19 to July 9, 2019
  • Site backfilling, final grading, and drainage preparations - July 10 to July 26, 2019
  • Final cleanup and demobilization - July 27 to July 29, 2019

During the project timeframe, there may be temporary single-lane closures on Victoria Street and pedestrian detours on Victoria Street and/or Cedar Avenue. The City asks that motorists and pedestrians take extra caution in these areas and to obey all posted signage. Dust and noise will be controlled to prevent the creation of a hazard or nuisance in the surrounding area. The Dust and Control Plan is attached for your reference
