Gyro Park Playground under Construction

Posted on Monday August 31, 2020

Update: November 3, 2020
The new Gyro Park playground is now open. The swing sets will be installed in the coming weeks, and the site remediation and landscaping will occur in the spring. Thank you for your patience and we hope everyone enjoys this new outdoor amenity. The City thanks Columbia Basin Trust and the Murphy Family Foundation for contributing to this community park.
See the news stories below and the City's media release from October 21, 2020 for more information about the project.

Gyro Playground

Update: October 16, 2020
The new Gyro Park playground and swing set will open upon completion of the ground remediation and sidewalk construction in the area. Crews will start this work next week (the week of October 19, 2020) and will need approximately three weeks to complete the job. Until then, the construction fencing will remain around the playground for everyone’s safety.

Thank you for your ongoing patience as we work through the project. We look forward to re-opening the playground and swing set soon. View an aerial photo of the progress here.

Original Notice: August 31, 2020
Contractors are onsite at Gyro Park to remove the existing playground structure and to prepare the area for new equipment that will be installed throughout September and October. To accommodate this work, the playground area will remain closed for the duration of the construction and the spray park will remain closed for the remainder of the season. We ask that all Gyro Park-goers take caution when in the area and to obey the posted signage. The City appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work through the project.

About the Gyro Park Playground Project

  • The current playground equipment at Gyro Park was installed in the early 2000s and has reached the end of its useful life.
  • In October 2019, the City submitted a grant proposal to Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Basin Plays program for $25,000 to go towards the project. The fund supports projects that improve facilities and equipment that increase participation by children and youth in physical activity and sport and that reduce barriers to participation and promote inclusivity and accessibility. The City received $22,500 in January 2020. The balance of $2,500 will be received once the final report is submitted to CBT.
  • In May 2020, Council approved to enter an agreement with Habitat Systems Incorporated, a company that specializes in the creation of outdoor spaces, for the installation of new playground equipment and ground surfacing for the Gyro Park Playground for a total of $371,258 plus taxes.
